International foot reader Jane Sheehan reveals what your feet really say about you...
Before you pack your bags, don your sun cream and root out your sunglasses, maybe you’d better take a look at your feet and those of your travel companions! Jane Sheehan, Foot Reader, says “Ask anyone how do they feel about their feet and no-one will be neutral. They’ll love them or hate them, but not much in between. Listen really carefully to the adjectives that they use when describing their own feet and you’ll get a great insight into how they feel about themselves.”
“I love my feet, they take me where I want to go”
You know their career is on the up
“My feet are a bit wide and lumpy and bumpy”
Oh oh! Time for the pre-holiday diet!
In a Time Magazine article (Oct 2000), actress Penelope Cruz admitted that her feet were “gnarled and ugly” yet when asked what part of her body she loved the most, she indicated her toes. In reflexology, the toe pads reflect the brain. So now we know if we meet her, don’t tell her how beautiful she looks because she doesn’t see herself that way. Instead, ask her about her views and opinions on things and you’ll get along much better.
There’s a growing trend that means the person next to you on the top deck by the pool could be reading your emotions and personality through your feet. I kid you not! Think about it. When you’re angry, how do you walk? You probably slam your foot down. When you’re depressed, how do you walk? Shoulders hunched over, head down and more weight on the front of your feet. When you are happy you’re more light-footed and have a spring in your step. All this is impacting on your feet and can reveal an awful lot about you.
So let’s have a look at you and your travel companions’ feet. Is your holiday going to be marred by a clash of personalities or are you going to hit it off and experience plain sailing all the way?
Long versus Short Feet:
Ill-fated cruisers, Kate Winslett (height 5’6) and Leonardo DiCaprio (height 6’) Stars of the film ‘The Titanic,’ both had the same shoe size (UK size 9, USA size 11). For their height Kate’s would be seen as long and his as short. Would they have made the idea cruise companions? Long feet indicate a need for recognition and if they’re really long then a love of being in the limelight. Short feet indicate someone who is very observant – they want to sit back and watch and see what’s going on before they jump in. So, provided Kate would be allowed to take the lead and Leonardo would be allowed to suss things out before joining in, they’d make good companions.
Wide versus narrow feet:
Wide feet mean that you are hard-working and can’t sit still. Narrow feet mean that you love the aesthetics, being pampered and when you stop, it’s a full-stop. So if you are a wide-footed person going on holiday with a narrow footed person, expect to leave them lounging by the pool whilst you disappear off for an action packed afternoon of mountain biking, abseiling or even white water rafting!
Length of little toe:
If you want your holiday companion to be fun, check out their little toes. If they have a little toe that is much shorter than you’d expect it to be compared to the other toes then they will have a real child-like sense of fun and an appreciation of the simple things in life.
Little toe on its side:
The degree that a little toe is on its side is the degree that the person is rebellious and unconventional. If your little toe is on its side, you’re in good company. David Beckham, unlike his wife, also has a little toe on its side which probably explains why he had the nerve to sport a sarong.
If your little toe is perfectly straight and your holiday mate’s toe is on its side, there is definitely going to be an excruciating moment during your holiday where you care what everyone thinks, and they don’t!
Be aware that there is also a “covert rebel” toe. This is where the little toe looks straight but if you move the fourth toe out of the way, you’ll see it is actually on its side and was just pretending to be straight. This means that they do the window dressing to appear to fit in and obey the rules, whilst behind the scenes going their own way and even breaking the rules! That could make for a very interesting holiday, especially if you’re not expecting it!
Separating little toe from fourth toe:
Even at the planning stage of your holiday, it’s useful to know whether your friends can wiggle their little toe separate from their fourth toe. If they can, then they’ll need an adventurous holiday with lots of change and stimulation – a cruise is a perfect option because of the variety of activities on offer. If things get routine, they’ll get bored – and you definitely don’t want that because then they’ll be at their most destructive! (If they can’t budge their little toe separately from their fourth toe then they will love routine and knowing what’s going to happen next).
Necks of the toes:
If you fancy a quiet holiday where you can be left in peace with your own thoughts – check out the necks of your companions toes. The longer the neck of the toe, the more expressive the person will be. If you don’t want them chatting incessantly, make sure the necks of their toes are short. Conversely, if you want someone with whom you can have lots of giggly girly gossip then make sure the necks of their toes are long!
Long second toes:
When you are on holiday, make sure there’s only one chief in the group. If all the toes ascend in a nice graduated line, but the 2nd toe is over that line, then this person will have strong leadership qualities. Beware – if they are not in a leadership role then they can become bossy! If there’s more than one in your group, then avoid problems by having clear responsibilities assigned to each.
Note: Just because the 2nd toe is longer than the big toe does not mean that it is a leadership toe. Sometimes it is the big toe that is too short. In this case it would mean a multi-tasker.
Leaning big toes (often caused by bunions):
Victoria Beckham gets a lot of bad press but I think she’s often misrepresented. According to her big toes which bend over towards her little toes, she does far too much for others and not enough for herself.
My guide gives a really fun insight into what your feet can actually say about you. Nearly 1 in 20 Brits admit to disliking their feet and claim they are by far their most embarrassing body part – I think that feet can actually be the most interesting body part, portraying hidden depths. You should certainly take time out to look after them so before you set sail, book that pedicure and put your best foot forward to ensure a fabulous holiday – and who knows – maybe you’ll meet the feet of your dreams…..
