Barbados

With its eye-squintingly white sandy beaches, unrivalled sunshine record and laid-back vibe, it’s easy to see why so many people are seduced by Barbados’ charms.

No wonder the Bajans, as the islanders are known, look so happy. Barbados seems to have more than its fair share of the good things in life. Head for one of the heavenly beaches and laze in the sun, go snorkelling, go sailing or swimming with turtles. Take a jeep safari through rolling landscapes patchworked with sugarcane fields or shake your hips to a steel band. Feeling thirsty? Head to a beach bar for an icy cool beer or get into the Caribbean spirit and check out the rum shops of Brit–in-bits Bridgetown.

Don’t Miss

Bridgetown – Take a walk around one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, soaking up the sights and the scene. Check out St Michael’s Cathedral and the historic Garrison, now the site of a racecourse and park.
Sunbury Plantation House – Get a feel for life in the plantation era in this grand seventeenth century plantation house.
Gun Hill – Check out the panoramic view from this watchtower, built in 1818 as part of a chain of signal stations.
Sandy Lane Bay – Go celeb spotting in this star-studded hangout on the platinum-card-wielding west coast.
