Dubrovnik
Go wild for medieval Dubrovnik. With its red-roofed stone houses, ramparts projecting into the sea and car-free white marble streets, it’s like a fantasy filmset.
It’s easy to see why Dubrovnik makes UNESCO’s World Heritage Site hit list. Take a turn on the monumental city walls and look down on shiny streets crammed with Baroque and Renaissance churches, ancient monasteries and palaces. Back at street level, stop off and soak up the scene at an outdoor café. Whatever you do, forget the high-fashion heels - this city is made for walking!
Don’t Miss
City walls – Got a head for heights? Climb up onto the old city walls for a walk with spectacular views across the city to the shimmering blue Adriatic. Begun in the 13th century, they encircle the old city like a gigantic whalebone corset.
The Placa – Some say Placa, some say Stradun, either way the city's main drag has more marble than a swanky hotel bathroom. Take a stroll down it or simply slide - it adds a whole new meaning to ‘slipping down to the shops’!
Franciscan monastery – Boots the chemist is but a baby compared to this place! Containing one of the oldest apothecary's in Europe, in business since 1391, it also houses a priceless collection of gold and silverware.
Ston – Clustered terracotta roofs make this small town feel like a pint-sized version of Dubrovnik, but with one of the world’s largest defensive walls (5km) and particularly good seafood restaurants.
